The large, shaggy Maine Coon breed is the oldest and only native long-haired cat in the United States. The cat probably is a mixture of the native American short-haired cats and the long-haired cats brought over by early Viking explorers, long before Columbus. The cat is classified as a "working cat" since it is an excellent and reliable mouser. The long, thick coat, plumed tail, tufts on feet and ears, large feet, and long hair inside the ears indicate that the cat's origins are from cold climates.

The Maine Coon's glossy coat is heavy and water resistant and is like that of no other long haired breed. The coat is longer on the neck, stomach, and britches in order to give protection from deep snow. Their large wide eyes and long muzzle are strong survival advantages for this natural breed.

The temper of this cat is calm and laid-back. They often continue to play even as an older cat. Since they are the largest natural breed in North America, their gentle manners are deeply appreciated by their owners.
